Lusaka City Council

The Ministry of Local Government and Housing falls under the Local Government and Decentralization Sector of the national economy. The Ministry is charged with the administration of the local government system and ensuring the projects of Zambia are provided. With the necessary manciple service, the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, in short term MLGH is multifunction in nature and oversees the implementation of delegated functions and responsibilities by the local authority  by messaging the social and political spheres of governance. According to the government gazette No 547 0f 2004, the ministry has  been assigned the following functions:-

  • Co-ordination of Local Government Administration
  • Regulation and provision of social amenities
  • Urban planing and regional planning
  • Chief's Affairs and House of Chiefs'
  • Water Supply and Sanitation
  • Provision of housing
  • Provision of municipal infrastructure service and support service
  • Co-ordination of the implementation of National Decentralisation Police; and
  • Provision of feeder, community and urban roads

The ministry functions also form the basis for the Local Government  Act, which sets out the legal provision for creation and classification of local authorities, their establishment, functions and indeed operations. In carrying out its mandate, the ministry has also established a number of statutory bodies to undertake specific function of the sector. The following are statutory bodies under the ministry of Local government and Housing:-

  • Chalimbana Local Government training Institute;
  • Gwembe District Special Fund;
  • National Housing Authority;
  • National Fire Training School;
  • Local Authority Superannuation Fund; and
  • Commercial water unity company

Chongwe District Council

Chongwe district, one of the four district in Lusaka Province, is situated above 45 km east of Lusaka on Great East Road. Agriculture is the main economical activity of the district. Major crops include maize, cotton, groundnuts and sunflowers.

Farming System Strengths

  • The district has abundant land resources  that can sustain crops, live stoke and fish farming
  • Land that could be irrigated, is abundant. In arears, rivers like chongwe, Lusamfwa and Mwapula have pools or ponds that do not dry out even during drought years. These could be used as a source of irrigation. In addition, there are.

The majority of trade originating from the District is by large scale-farmers who supply live stock products to Lusaka and, in recent year, provided horticulture product to international markets.

The district has potential for development in farming, tourism and other industrial activities.

Identifiable mining activities in the district sand mining and quarrying. The District supplies huge quantity of building and river sand to neighboring Lusaka districts. Sand mining is largely done by small scale farmers and thus not been utilised effectively to benefit the whole district in terms of employment, income and levies to the council.

  • Chinyumbu Hot Spring: Planning is under way for development of the health resort and construction of a geothermal power plant to provide electricity power to the local communities 50 kilometer east of Lusaka on the Great East Road.
  • Ancient painting in the caves in Lukoshi area and surrounding hills, such as Leopard Hills.
  • safari hunting and game viewing in the game Management Area of Shikabeta.
  • Lodges, Camping and Motel facilities such as Chaminuka Lodge with game farming and lodging facilities

Chibombo District Council

Chibombo is a town in the Central Province of Zambia, and is the headquaters of Chibombo District. The town lies near the Lukanga Swamp. It is 95 km north of Lusaka and 45 km south-west of Kabwe on the Great North Road.
